Show Review: DSquared2 Pre-Fall 2013

Dean and Dan Caten’s brand DSquared2 is known for its rock-and-roll sensibility and over-the-top glamour, but the duo is going much more refined and retro-inspired for Pre-Fall 2013. Influenced by Harlem’s 1920′s hotspot The Cotton Club and the Jazz Age, Jasmine Tookes models the offerings for the season, full of body-conscious silhouettes and menswear chic tailoring.

Curve-hugging dresses accessorized with opera gloves and sparkling jewelry, knee-length pencil skirts for work or play, classic trenches adding polish to your everyday ensembles: clearly the Caten brothers miss the days when dressing up was de rigueur. All paired with dark red lips, trouser socks, and sky-high platform sandals, the designs are simultaneously retro and modern.

The color palette spans from brights like tangerine and pink to autumnal hues including grey, forest green, and nude. Textures are mixed to perfection: tweed paired with silk, splashes of corduroy, and the brand’s signature leather and denim.

Prints in the collection include Fall-perfect red and black tartan and an oversize petal print that is an interesting juxtaposition with wide-leg trousers and a chunky knit sweater.

It is rare for a Hollywood starlet to wear DSquared2 on the red carpet, but it might just happen more than a few times in the coming months with the glamorous ensembles on display here. From Josephine Baker-esque open back gowns to a chic expertly-tailored suit, the brand’s fans including June Ambrose, Rita Ora, Melanie B, and others should definitely try these designs on for size.
