Designer Files: Betsey Johnson

Known for her exuberant personality as well as her designs, American fashion superstar Betsey Johnson began designing in the 1960s after winning a guest editor contest with the now-defunct Mademoiselle magazine. She instantly hit the ground running, becoming the house designer for the cult favorite boutique Paraphernalia. Married to Velvet Underground’s John Cale, Johnson was linked to the whole Andy Warhol scene (Edie Sedgwick was her house model). After designing for the label Alley Cat, Johnson launched her signature Betsey Johnson line in 1978. Her quirky, colorful, and whimsical clothing has always been her trademark; imagine floral-printed baby-doll dresses, hoop-skirted dresses, sequined jackets, and striped rompers. Celebrities—ranging from Cyndi Lauper to Heather Graham and Salma Hayek to Courtney Love, have always adored her. One thing remains certain: Johnson’s designs are her vision alone and don’t follow any fashion trends. Johnson was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame in New York in 2002.
